World’s longest Christmas season begins
MANILA, Philippines – Christmas, a holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus, is “the most wonderful time of the year,” as an old song goes. The occasion, usually characterized by festive decor and lots of food, is observed on December 24 (Christmas Eve) and 25 in most countries. Here in the Philippines, however, celebrations start as early as September 1. Because of this, our country has earned the distinction of having the world’s longest Christmas season, which lasts for at least 115 days (festivities usually continue after December 25, and may extend until February of the following year). Streets decorated with colorful lights, trees and lanterns, as well as Christmas carols played all day long are a common scene in the Philippines in September, especially in Metro Manila. Businesses, too, have made it a point to gear up for the Christmas season with their respective gimmicks and offerings.
Here are some of them: SM Mall of Asia, one of the biggest malls in the country, is prepping up its 5-storey recreation center called Cosmic Kidz. The amusement park, said to be the largest in the Philippines, boasts of high-tech games, toy stores and interactive booths for kids and adults alike. Theme park Enchanted Kingdom, on the other hand, is readying its artificial snow for those who wish to experience a “White Christmas” in tropical Philippines. Of course, Christmas in the Philippines is not the same without the traditional COD (Christmas on Display) show. The moving mannequin play, which has provided free entertainment to Filipinos for decades, is currently set in front of the Greenhills Shopping Center.
Wonderland of Lights
The highlight of each year takes place from Thanksgiving through Christmas. Wonderland of Lights, when the City is aglow with approximately ten million lights. Marshall’s historic Old Courthouse is the centerpiece of this spectacular event. Activities include surrey rides, outdoor ice-skating, candlelight tours of historic homes, and a lighted Christmas parade. Local citizens portrayed in lights include actress Susan Howard, former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman, and the late civil rights activist James Farmer. Others are television journalist Bill Moyers, football hero Y.A. Tittle, Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson, Olympic barrel racing gold and bronze medalist Martha Josey and her husband, R.E. and Tuskegee airman Mac Hopkins. Tour buses leave on an hourly basis from Washington Square to see the millions of twinkling lights decorating the trees, businesses and residences.

Mosca Holiday lights: Safe & Green Friendly review about Christmas Holiday Incandescent lights vs. Mosca LED Holiday Lights
Is it a bright idea to use LED lights for the holidays? George Mosca of Mosca Design has compared LED and incandescent bulbs in three sizes—mini, C7, and C9—determining how much it cost to light strings totaling 50 feet for 300 hours and 100 feet for 300 hours. George Mosca also exposed the bulbs to moisture, hot and cold temperatures for durability, and UV light, and sent each type of bulb to an independent lab that measures brightness.
Price. in the long run Mosca Design Holiday LEDS are the way to go. Per string, LEDs can be a bit more expensive than incandescents. The C7 and C9 sets have the same number of bulbs as incandescents, but the LED were brighter. In turn gives the wow effect; more to wrap a tree in C7 and C9 LEDs. Mini LED strings we tested were the same length as incandescents (25 feet).
Energy use and costs. LEDs won. They used 1 to 3 kilowatt hours of energy, compared with 12 to 105 kWh for the incandescents, saving $1 to $11.
Durability. LEDs won. All LED bulbs were working even after 4,000-plus hours, while each string of incandescents had one or more bulbs burn out before 2,000 hours. The LED bulbs were also nylon and therefore less likely to break than the glass incandescents.
Brightness. Mosca LED lights won. The C9 and C7 incandescents were five to six times hotter than the LEDs, though the mini incandescents were slightly dimmer in lighting effect than the mini LEDs.
Why should I use LED Holiday lights versus standard incandescent?
• LED lights last up to 10 times longer than incandescent Holiday lights
• LED lights can save over 85% in energy costs versus incandescent Holiday lights
• LED lights use solid state components and plastic lamp covers versus fragile filaments and glass bulbs
• LED lights generate very little heat, making them a safer, cool to the touch product
What is the difference between Warm White , Cool White and Pure White?
Warm White LED lights emit a softer light that looks like the light emitted by standard incandescent Christmas lights. Cool White LED lights emit a slightly blueish color light. The pure White LED lights emit a bright clear light that is harsher on the eye than Warm White.
Bottom line Mosca Design has been in the Christmas Holiday Lights business for over 29 years Georges personal pick is his new minleon LEDs are better for the environment; run much cooler, reducing fire risk; should last longer; and could save money eventually. But it’s apt to take more than one holiday season for the savings to kick in, and you might not realize any savings if payback takes more than three 90-day seasons. Mosca Design’s Artificial Christmas Tree Quality and Construction The two primary materials 99% of artificial Christmas trees are made of is PVC and PE. PVC trees have needles cut from thin, colored sheets of PVC, whereas PE trees have needles that were made in a mold, resulting in a thicker, three dimensional shape that is more realistic. More often than not, even PE trees have some PVC needles. Because the cost of manufacturing PE needles is significantly higher, branches with PVC needles are generally used on the inside of a PE tree as filler, behind the PE needles. It is rare for an artificial Christmas tree to have only PE needles, although there are a couple on the market today, such as the Mosca Design & Deodora Fir.
The construction of artificial panel trees also generally comes in three forms. The hinged varieties are much easier and faster to set up, and are correspondingly more expensive. Most specialty Christmas stores that stock artificial trees only sell hinged construction trees, while it’s common to find the former style in big box stores that do not specialize in Christmas products. Giant commercial Christmas trees have yet two additional types of construction, metal cylindrical frames that stack, with places to insert branches along the frames, and panel trees, typically with garland wrapped around the panels. Panel trees tend to look very futeristic, and are far cheaper than commercial trees with frame construction.
Because Mosca Artificial Christmas tree should last 5-10 years and possibly more, it makes sense to buy one with quality construction. Not only will the tree be easier to assemble and store, but over time you’ll likely save money by avoiding having to replace a low quality tree. Apart from needle types and construction, another major factor in choosing a Mosca artificial Christmas tree is whether to get one that is pre-lit or unlit.
You’ll find that most commercial Holiday Decor companies only sell pre-lit artificial Christmas trees, although there are a few unlit trees on the market too. Unlit trees are obviously less expensive, and the advantage to having an unlit tree is that you can light it however you like. On the flip side, pre-lit trees often have high quality commercial lights, and because they’re pre-strung and attached to the branches, you tend to get a much greater light count with an even spread.
You can find pre-lit artificial Christmas trees with white lights, multi colored lights, and solid colored lights in both incandescent bulbs and LED lights. Incandescent bulbs account for the great majority of lights on artificial trees today, however LED lights are just beginning to appear on the scene.
